The Need for Alternative Education
Hearthstone serves families who prefer its individualized, interdisciplinary, hands-on approach to learning or whose children are not learning, not happy, under-served, or under-challenged elsewhere. Some students attend Hearthstone from Nursery/Kindergarten through graduation in the 12th grade; others transfer from other schools at various ages. Hearthstone also supports the homeschooling community by offering part-time participation in classes and activities such as Art, Music, Dance, Foreign Language, and Phys. Ed. Finally, Hearthstone is a resource for all area educators, developing and sharing innovative educational methods with other teachers and schools.

The Challenge: Developing Financial Stability
Hearthstone’s objective for financial stability is to meet increased enrollment and to achieve long-range fiscal stability. Hearthstone has undertaken a major renovation project in its new location on commercial land on Route 211 in Sperryville, Virginia, adjacent to Shenandoah National Park. The new school has the capacity to serve 80 students. There is ample space to support all school activities as well as after-school, evening, weekend, and summer enrichment programs to benefit the whole community.
