The need for imagination, a sense of truth and a feeling of responsibility: these are the three forces which are the very heart of education.

Information

For Prospective Donors:  Hearthstone has established a "Lighting the Fire” Capital Campaign. It is hoped that this campaign will raise $900,000 from individuals, corporations and foundations as outright gifts or pledges of three years or less. At Hearthstone an enormous amount of work has always been done, and will continue to be done, by volunteers; projected construction costs reflect this factor. For information on giving opportunities please call the school office at 540-987-9212, or email us at info@hearthstoneschool.org.

For Job-Seekers: All positions at Hearthstone School are currently filled. If you are interested in future employment opportunities, please mail your resume to: Hearthstone School, P.O. Box 247, Sperryville, Virginia, 22740.

For Volunteers: Hearthstone’s volunteers, whether parents of enrolled children or enthusiastic members of the larger community, are the backbone of the organization. Volunteers do construction, fundraising, cleaning and maintenance, teaching, administration and more at Hearthstone.

Further Information for Prospective Donors:
The Need for Alternative Education
Hearthstone serves families who prefer its individualized, interdisciplinary, hands-on approach to learning or whose children are not learning, not happy, underserved or under-challenged elsewhere. Some students attend Hearthstone from nursery school through graduation in 12th grade; others transfer from other schools at various ages. Hearthstone also supports the homeschooling community by offering part-time participation in classes and activities such as art, music, dance, language, and sports. Finally, Hearthstone is a resource for all area educators, developing and sharing innovative educational methods with other teachers and schools.

The Challenge: Establishing a Permanent Home and Developing Financial Stability
Hearthstone’s two objectives of a permanent home and financial security are closely linked. Hearthstone had reached the limits of growth in its former location on a private estate. Both a larger building and a commercially zoned location were necessary to meet increased enrollment and to achieve long-range fiscal stability. Hearthstone has undertaken a major renovation project in its new location on seven acres of commercial land on Route 211 in Sperryville, Virginia, adjacent to Shenandoah National Park. The new school will have the capacity to serve 200 students when planned construction is complete. There will be ample space to support all school activities as well as after-school, evening, weekend, and summer enrichment programs that will benefit the whole community.

Hearthstone’s needs include: capital support to complete the renovation; operating funds to pay the mortgage, teacher salaries, and overhead expenses until the new facility allows enrollment to grow to stable levels; musical instruments, library books and equipment including new laboratory equipment, a tractor, and a riding mower.

Please contact Jane Mullan at 540-987-9212 or email info@hearthstoneschool.org for more information, to arrange a visit, or to see a copy of the school’s Case Statement.
